If there is one thing I have learned in the past few years it is that travelling before a race can be exhausting! So I took an entire 3 days off work to keep stress levels low for both me and for Matt. Thursday morning I headed up to Pure Austin to meet Karl and do an open water swim in the quarry. After a few errands Matt and I were ready to hit the road. First stop, Marble Falls to drop off our sweet dachshund. Second stop, Abilene! Spending Thursday night in Abilene was the BEST decision ever. Breaking the trip up into 2 days really helped with the travelling fatigue. Friday morning I slept in and completed a quick 20-minute spin workout (made up of a few 3 minute hard sets) given to me by my amazing coach. One of the worst mistakes an athlete can make before a race is doing nothing, you’ve got to keep the blood flowing and although it shouldn’t be too long, it is a good idea to put a few hard minutes into the workout. After a shower and a snack we were off to Lubbock. The drive from Abilene to Lubbock was quick and we even passed a few friends along the way! We checked into the Holiday Inn Express (I highly recommend this hotel if you are in Lubbock area!) and made a quick grocery trip to Sprouts to pick up some essentials. I may have picked up some nonessentials at another little boutique…but hey…a girl needs a little retail therapy before a race!! Later in the day I headed over to packet pickup, went to dinner with the team and then called it a night. Typically on Saturday morning there is a quick ride and then we drop off our bikes to spend the night in their little transition zones. But at Buffalo Springs there is no bike drop before the race, which is a little strange, but it turned out great. Instead of worrying about bike drop off Anne and I headed over to the race site to watch the final leg of the olympic and sprint races happening. We got in a little swim and watched the kids swim start (so adorable!). Some of the other T3 athletes demolished the Saturday race and gave us some insight into the heat and hills we would face on race day. Later in the day I met Karl and Michael for a short test ride. We rode up the first 2 hills on the course (which in my opinion are the worst!) and called it a day after about 30 minutes. Then it was time to plan the team dinner and get ready for bed! Pre Race Calories: Thursday Dinner- Jason’s Deli Spinach Veggie Wrap Friday Breakfast – Holiday Inn breakfast Friday Lunch – Veggie sandwich at Schlotzsky's Deli Friday Dinner – the create your own pasta at Olive Garden Saturday Breakfast – Holiday Inn breakfast Saturday Lunch – Vegan & Gluten Free Amy’s Mac & Cheese, banana, grapes Saturday Dinner – Veggie Dijon Pasta at Orlando’s and about 90 ounces of water! Saturday I also made sure to drink, drink, drink, and I added my favorite Tri Berry Nuun to half of the water.
